Septic Compass is a free service that connects homeowners with licensed local septic companies. We are not a contractor and do not perform septic work.

The short answer

Tank size is based on the number of bedrooms. A 2-3 bedroom home usually needs a 1,000-gallon tank, a 4-bedroom home needs about 1,250 gallons, and larger homes need 1,500 gallons or more. Your county health department sets the required minimum, so confirm the local rule before installing.
