Septic Compass is a free service that connects homeowners with licensed local septic companies. We are not a contractor and do not perform septic work.

The short answer

The drain field, or leach field, is a set of buried perforated pipes in gravel trenches where liquid from the tank soaks into the soil. The soil filters and treats the effluent. It's the part of a septic system that fails most often and is the most expensive to replace.
