Septic Compass is a free service that connects homeowners with licensed local septic companies. We are not a contractor and do not perform septic work.

The short answer

Start with your property's as-built or septic permit, often on file with the county health department. Otherwise, follow the main sewer pipe out from the house; the tank is usually 10 to 25 feet from the foundation. A septic pro can locate and mark it, and add risers so it's easy to find next time.
